Haven't posted much this week because I don't know whether I'm coming or going these days. I've been dividing my time between 3 different libraries. My boss left me a note this morning addressed to the "vagabond librarian." Honestly, I'm beginning to feel like one.
I did want to post about an unusal little movie I watched earlier in the week -
Secretary, which stars everyone's favorite slimy yuppie Brat Packer - James Spader.
In a nutshell this movie is about a girl recently released from a mental hospital because she's into self-mutilation (you know - cutting herself, burning herself etc.). To escape her completely whacked out family, she decides to take a job as a secretary for a lawyer. Now our lawyer also has some issues - namely he's a dominant personality and is more than a bit disgusted with himself. So begins their relationship - based on humilation, dominance and submission - but along the way, I'm convinced they are truly in love.
Whether or not you think S&M behavior can exist in a healthy relationship isn't really the point this movie is trying to make. I have this thing for unconventional love stories - and
Secretary is about as unconventional as they come. It's moving, it's gripping - it makes me want to buy the DVD for myself. Color me a sicko if you want. I can't help it.

The big Supreme Court case being discussed at the moment is the whole University of Michigan Affirmative Action dealie - so it's likely many of you web denizens out there haven't see this yet.
First the Patriot Act - now this. I can't wait for the first library patron to come in who won't be able to find breast cancer information without me having to wrangle with some cumbersome filter first. Lord - don't ya just love it when the government makes your job harder?

I had the day off work yesterday because of an eye doctor's appointment. When I took my current job - which comes with staring at a computer monitor for 8 hours a day under the hum of flourscent lighting - my eye sight started going downhill. Even though I got new glasses less than a year ago, I'm starting to get migraines again. So I hightailed it back to my doctor only to learn that my eyes hadn't gotten too bad - my distance vision has gotten worse is all. So I'm currently waiting for new lenses to come in.
As for the migraines? Well, it's probably just stress - my answer for any mysterious ailment.
I'm at the halfway mark of The Forever Kiss by Thea Devine. Ugh. It's not hideous - but it's completely convoluted, even by Devine standards. There's two guys running around pretending to be the same guy, a horny heroine who lacks any sort of credible motivation, an evil mother figure, and mysterious dead bodies that have been drained of all their blood. Even worse? Hardly any naughty sex scenes! The horrors!
It's definately not the worst I've read by this author - but it's not the best by a long shot either. I'm still waiting for the day when she publishs another gem like Desired. Man - was that a great book. Completely filthy, with a soap opera plot fit for Heather Locklear. When it was reprinted recently I was half tempted to buy another copy - even though I already own it. That's saying something.

Well I finally finished Bad Moon Rising by Katherine Sutcliffe over the weekend and really loved it. This book had everything. A nicely done romance centered around the theme of redemption (my personal fave), a gruesome serial killer, some seriously whacked out secondary characters, and a suspense thread that kept cooking all the way to the end. I really need to drop the author a note and tell her how much I adored this book.
Next up is The Forever Kiss by Thea Devine. As I've expounded on several times in this blog - I adore Devine. OK - so her stories have no redeemable qualities to them whatsoever. But who wants redeemable qualities when there's convoluted suspense threads and oodles of sex? I'm a little cautious going into this one though as she's treading back into vampire territory. I couldn't get past page 50 of her last foray into Vampire Land (Sinful Secrets).
Hope all the daddies out there had a nice Father's Day. I am currently daughter of the year. I got my old man all 4 Harry Potter books on audio, and have #5 on order for him. I got Dad hooked on audios after he took a new job with a lengthy commute. I swear he's pestering me almost as much as the kids at work when it comes to Harry.
And to be fair - I'm just as rabid about getting my hands on #5.....

Ahhh, blessedly beautiful Friday.
I'm still reading Bad Moon Rising by Katherine Sutcliffe. I knew I should have called in dead when I had the chance. Drat! I find myself on page 168 and am trying to scheme in some serious reading time this weekend so I can finish it. The suspense thread is still keeping me glued to the pages - and these characters keep surprising me, in a good way.
In Library Land, the kiddies are out of school which means 2 things. 1) Our annual summer reading program has begun and 2) we have kids camping out here for hours at a stretch. I'm talking like 4 hours at a time folks.
Now this wouldn't be a bad thing except many of these kids are only here because Mom and/or Dad want them out of their hair. So far we haven't had too many disciplinary problems - but the summer is still young.
It is fun though to watch the real little kids get excited about reading - the preschoolers especially. When we give them stickers and allow them to put their name up on our "Reading Honor Roll," you'd think we'd given them the moon. I had one mother tell me that her daughter wants to come to the library every day. A future librarian no doubt.

Oh My God! I am reading the best book right now. Seriously, I think I may have to quit my job, call in dead - something - anything - so I can get more reading time in.
What book is making me froth at the mouth? Bad Moon Rising by Katherine Sutcliffe.
For those of you who do not orbit the romance novel universe, let me give you a little background here. Sutcliffe got her start writing historical romances - which I have read none. Bad Moon Rising is her second foray into romantic suspense and all I can say is - Ms. Sutcliffe don't go back to historicals! If her latest is any indication of what she can do with a suspense book - some publisher somewhere needs to be offering this woman a hardcover deal - and fast!
What makes this book so good? Well for starters there is a suitably creepy serial killer who's got this thing for mutilating hookers. Mix in our hero - a former assistant district attorney for New Orleans who's been on a bender ever since said serial killer murdered his family. Stir in our heroine - a former hooker back in town after a hysterical phone call from a friend; a friend who has now gone missing. Sprinkle liberally with the dysfunctional members of the hero's extended family (a former beauty queen, an a-hole brother, a surly teenage boy) and viola! Wendy wants to quit her job and her life to read full time.
I'm only on page 87....
Sigh

The unthinkable has happened.
My younger sister has read a trashy romance novel.
My younger sister who reads Ayn Rand and Lady Chatterley's Lover - for fun.
And boy did she pick a doozy. My sister decided to read Bliss River by Thea Devine.
I have a major weakness for Devine - but even I admit her books have no redeemable qualities to them whatsoever. I read them for the camp factor - and of course the naughtiness. Think of her books like Melrose Place (or any other Aaron Spelling soap) with more naked people and you'll have a vague idea what her writing is like.
Naturally I had to offer some sisterly advice to Sheri on what books to try and which ones to avoid like the plague. Romance-erotica is a potential disaster zone for an inexperienced romance reader.
Now all I have to do is convince her that there is such a thing as good writing, strong characters, and interesting plots in romance novels.
This is going to take a lot of persuasion and work on my part....

Well by now we all know that Sammy Sosa is a moron. A corked bat - just lovely. Makes one wonder how legit all those homeruns are.
And I'm sorry - I'm not buying the excuse that Sosa uses the corked bat during batting practice in order to give the fans a giddy thrill. True fans don't get a rat's behind about homeruns. Note to MLB - fans like to see baseball games with decent pitching and baseball-like scores - not games with 3 grand slams and final scores of 35-27.
When it comes to baseball, I personally prefer to watch the defensive play. Nothing is more watchable than a short stop snagging a line drive mid-leap, a center fieldman making a sliding grab, or a pitcher somehow catching a ball that was hit right back at him. That's the kind of stuff that makes watching highlight reels worthwhile.
Then again - what do I know?

I was so excited about the idiot-college-boys moving out yesterday that I was remiss in mentioning that my Detroit Tigers screwed up Roger Clemens' 300th win. Yippeee!
I hate the New York Yankees. I mean, I passionately hate them. I consider them "The Evil Empire" and that any player they buy away from any and all small market teams has "crossed over to the dark side." Now some of you misguided web denizens may find my irrational hatred for the Yanks....well....irrational, but one must remember I grew up in the Midwest. Hating the Yankees is as American as apple pie, July 4th, and gas-guzzling pick-up trucks.
I was mightily annoyed because everyone (and I mean everyone) assumed that it was a foregone conclusion that Clemens would get #300 against my Tigers. Now I am nothing but an optimist - Tigers fans have to be - and I know my boys aren't all that good this year.
OK they suck eggs. However they are a young team and they are starting to play better. Honest - they are.
Now I figured the Yanks would beat my Tigers (although I was praying otherwise) and sure enough they did - in the 17th inning! But by that point my Tiggers had tied the game and screwed it all up for Rog.
I'm telling you, it warmed my heart.

Oh Happy Glorious Joyous Monday!
Went to leave for work this morning only to run into my apartment buildings' maintenance men. They informed me that the American-beer-swilling-college-boy-morons upstairs from our apartment have moved out! Happy happy, joy joy! My boyfriend and I had been thinking they were awfully quiet up there lately (no loud music, no idiot girls running up and down the stairs, no broken beer bottles in the parking lot, no more vomit on my car's windshield, etc. etc. etc.)
Needless to say this news pretty much made my day.
